Think that new tech will change your life? Think again
Business Technology | January 7, 2014
The arrival of a new technology always comes with plenty of excitement. And why not? We always picture how new technology will change not only our lives but the world, too. Nevertheless, most new technology has a smaller impact on the world than we hope. That’s the unhappy truth about new technology: Regardless of how cool it is, it almost never changes our world significantly.
Reality vs. hype
The website Gizmodo recently ran a article on the hype that predictably accompanies new technology. As the story says, the appearance of new tech is usually covered with breathless prose saying that the new product will reinvent our lives, make us more empathetic or bring about a more productive and peaceful world. Unfortunately, as the Gizmodo story says, most new tech does little of this.
No big changes
As Gizmodo says, new technologies have the potential to change the lives of men and women…maybe. But they will not change the whole world, for better or worse. And that is probably a good thing. Do we really need the world to change each time a new technology debuts?
One thing never changes
Of course, the Gizmodo story does list one universal truth for technology: Teens will use virtually all forms of new technology to have sex. On the positive side? These same teens would have found some other way to have sex even without the technology. As Gizmodo says, that’s a given.
