The essentials for smartwatches

Business Technology | October 1, 2013

Wearable technology is hot. And smartwatches are, too. But what should we consumers be expecting from smartwatches? What features are absolutely essential?

Aware

Thomas Claburn, an editor with InformationWeek, recently listed his own must-haves for smartwatches. And, we must admit, his suggestions seem sensible. For starters, Claburn says that smartwatches should act as sensors. Which means they ought to be able to determine the temperature, measure your body’s vital signs and tell you how close you are to that new Japanese restaurant.

No Charging Hassles

Easy charging is important, too. Claburn says that consumers ought to be able to charge smartwatches merely by setting them on a charging plate, sparing everyone a mess of cords. An even better thought: Smartwatches should charge themselves when you walk.

No Financial Hit

Claburn also states that smartwatches shouldn’t break our budgets. Smartwatches should retail for about $99. That’s much more affordable than the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch that retails for a whopping $299.
