Make Transitioning To Windows 8 Easier

Business Technology | December 6, 2012

The Windows 8 operating system has had a lot of positive reviews. It has a wide range of features that were not present in previous versions. So if you are ready to upgrade, there are several steps you should take to make sure it goes smoothly. An article recently written by Smallbiz Technology goes into a lot of detail, but we have chosen a few of the most crucial and shared them below.

Do the Research

Before upgrading to Windows 8, be sure that your computer can effectively run the new operating system. Machines need 1GB of RAM, 16GB of hard-drive space, and a 1GHz processor to run Windows 8. If you’re already running Windows 7 on your computer, don’t worry. Microsoft lists the same specs for both operating systems.

Backups

Before starting the upgrade, ensure that all of your important files are protected. You can either store your files in a cloud service, an external hard drive or a server. This will safeguard your most important files in case disaster strikes during the upgrade.

Setup utility

Microsoft offers its own setup utility that will search your computer to find out if your software and drivers are supported in Windows 8. This is especially important for machines that are using Windows XP. As you might know, Microsoft will no longer provide support to this operating system starting in 2014. If you’re upgrading from it to Windows 8, you’ll need to reinstall all of your drivers and software. This means you will need to find all those installation discs that was included with your software. Updating to a new operating system is never a simple task. But Windows 8 promises to be worth it. The additional features that come with the system could improve your efficiency at work. Just make sure that you take the steps needed for a safe and hassle-free Windows 8 installation.
