{"id":997,"date":"2016-12-20T00:58:38","date_gmt":"2016-12-20T00:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nexthop.ca\/?p=997"},"modified":"2022-09-30T12:56:31","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T19:56:31","slug":"protect-yourself-against-ransomware-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/protect-yourself-against-ransomware-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Protect Yourself Against Ransomware (Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1059\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/computer-apple-a-day.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-964\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1059\" class=\"wp-image-1059 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/computer-apple-a-day-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Proactive Computer Repair and Protection for Businesses in Metro Vancouver Fraser Valley and Abbotsford\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/computer-apple-a-day-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/computer-apple-a-day-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/computer-apple-a-day-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Proactive Computer Repair and Protection for Businesses in Metro Vancouver Fraser Valley and Abbotsford<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST RANSOMWARE (Part 2)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this series we\u2019ve been discussing ransomware and, in our previous post, we provided the \u201cgo-to\u201d measures that most of us take when considering network security, especially protecting our files against ransomware. \u00a0Many of us wouldn\u2019t think past establishing virus protection and backing up our computers, and there\u2019s no shame in that, but there are certainly measures that can be taken to give our security an added boost. \u00a0In this post we\u2019ll continue where we left off, with our remaining three methods for protection against ransomware.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NUMBER 3: \u00a0CHECK PRIVILEGES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When ransomware attacks a workstation on a multi-user network such as your office computers, it utilizes the <em>compromised persons permissions<\/em> to encrypt files on an individual\u2019s local computer and the network. \u00a0To ensure that the attacker\u2019s file access is limited, you can make sure your staff only have access to the files and drives they need; avoid unnecessarily providing global permissions to your entire staff. \u00a0Limiting permissions to those who need them means limiting access for ransomware.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NUMBER 4: \u00a0EDUCATE YOUR STAFF<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Training your staff can make all the difference when trying to prevent a ransomware attack. \u00a0One of the primary means of access to your computers and network is when staff open the proverbial gate and let the attackers walk in. \u00a0Providing your staff with some training around recognizing malicious emails and avoiding certain types of websites can go a very long way. \u00a0More often than not, employees haven&#8217;t intentionally invited ransomware onto your network. \u00a0More likely, they were simply uninformed and let their guard down.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><br \/>\nONE OF THE PRIMARY MEANS OF ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTERS AND NETWORK IS WHEN STAFF OPEN THE PROVERBIAL GATE AND LET THE ATTACKERS WALK IN.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nNUMBER 5: \u00a0SET UP A STRONG FIREWALL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even with the above training, mistakes can be made. \u00a0But you can support your staff\u2019s efforts by installing a proper enterprise-grade firewall that uses packet inspections. \u00a0These powerful defense systems not only prevent the usual suspects, but they inspect network traffic for any malicious payloads that may be hidden deep within files as they\u2019re transferred to and from your computers.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got a strong firewall assisting you in protecting your files, you should access its application control function and choose to \u201cblock malware activity.\u201d \u00a0This will give your firewall specific orders to focus on these types of threats. Additionally, it would be wise to establish a policy and appoint specific people that will ensure your firewalls, servers, desktops, anti-virus firmware, and patches are current. After all, there is no point in running a firewall that <em>used to be strong <\/em>a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t feel bad if you\u2019ve been unprotected for some time now. \u00a0But it is definitely advisable to get set up as quickly as possible. \u00a0Ransomware isn\u2019t one of those problems that you can see coming.
