{"id":979,"date":"2016-12-06T01:16:49","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T01:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nexthop.ca\/?p=979"},"modified":"2022-09-30T12:54:47","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T19:54:47","slug":"ransomware-why-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/ransomware-why-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Ransomware &#8211; Why Care?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-image.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-964\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-964\" src=\"http:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-image-1024x514.jpg\" alt=\"Ransomware\" width=\"1024\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-image-1024x514.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-image-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-image-768x386.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nexthop.ca\/it-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5-image.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>RANSOMWARE &#8211; WHY CARE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ransomware is a malicious program that, once installed on your computer, can kidnap your company\u2019s files. \u00a0It provides its makers with considerable amounts of cash and therefore isn\u2019t going anywhere anytime soon. \u00a0In our previous post, we discussed the rise of Ransomware in Canada and now we will discuss how it may impact you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALL DEVICES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To make Ransomware particularly annoying, it can actually be unleashed across multiple devices. \u00a0We have grown accustomed to our Windows PC\u2019s being susceptible to viruses and we take measures to prevent this from happening, but ransomware has been developed for all your devices. \u00a0Hackers have developed versions for Linux servers as well as Android phones. \u00a0Researchers have also found that programs are easily created for MAC OS and even Smart TV\u2019s!<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPACTING YOUR BUSINESS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Small businesses are perfect targets for ransomware developers because they possess the ideal qualities of both large corporations and casual computer owners. \u00a0In other words, small business computer networks often deal with large sums of money but, just as often, haven\u2019t set up adequate protection against these sorts of attacks. \u00a0The perfect storm.<\/p>\n<p>History reveals that ransomware attacks don\u2019t target anyone specifically, anyone who may be willing to pay a few hundred dollars to unlock their files makes an ideal target. \u00a0The ransom fees range from $25 to $600 (approximately) &#8211; definitely inconvenient, but also an amount with which many would be willing to part, if it meant rescuing their personal photos or account information.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><br \/>\nSMALL BUSINESSES ARE PERFECT TARGETS FOR RANSOMWARE DEVELOPERS<br \/>\nBECAUSE THEY POSSESS THE IDEAL QUALITIES OF BOTH LARGE CORPORATIONS<br \/>\nAND CASUAL COMPUTER OWNERS<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>ISN\u2019T KIDNAPPING ILLEGAL?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There have been some successes in the area of law enforcement on this front. \u00a0Large private security companies, together with law enforcement agencies have managed to prosecute ransomware attackers but these cases are far and few between. \u00a0Although committees are always being formed to deal with large scale cyber attacks, little is really being done for the common user. \u00a0Some experts even suggest that, if <em>the little guy<\/em> is threatened with ransomware, there may be just one course of action: \u00a0pay them what they want. \u00a0If your computer is kidnapped, there may not be much you can do. \u00a0A harsh reality that makes these sorts of attacks so frightening.<\/p>\n<p>It can be unsettling to think about losing important files, personal and financial. \u00a0Hopefully that feeling will spur us all to take action and protect ourselves against ransomware. \u00a0In our next post we\u2019ll look specifically at prevention. \u00a0In the meantime, if you have any questions about ransomware or if you think you\u2019ve fallen victim to it, feel free to get in touch with us on our website or leave a comment in the section below.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RANSOMWARE &#8211; WHY CARE?
